CanoScan 9950F

Scan like the pros, right at home. The powerful CanoScan® 9950F Color Image Scanner delivers the ultimate in scanning performance and quality. It handles a wide range of originals, from photos and documents to transparencies and negatives up to large-format 4 x 5 inch. You'll simply be amazed at the quality of your scans. The 9950F scanner achieves a spectacular 4800 x 9600 dpi color resolution (max.) and 48-bit color depth for over 281 trillion possible colors. An available USB 2.0 Hi-Speed 1 or FireWire 2 connection ensures the highest possible transfer rates, which is especially important on large files, and previews are available in about 3.6 seconds. For added convenience, four easy buttons - Copy, Scan, PDF and E-mail - automate the scanning process, so your projects can go much faster. Just position your original, select the use for the image, and in seconds it's ready to go. The Hyper CCD IV is Canon’s first 4800 dpi CCD sensor for flatbed scanners. In combination with a Super Toric (ST) Lens and the scanner's dual light system, the Hyper CCD IV is able to produce visibly clearer results with finer details. The ST lens also has a large aperture to pick up more light than conventional lenses, a factor which leads to faster and brighter scans. Re-touch that old film automatically. Are some of your most precious images on old slides and negatives worn and collecting dust? Canon has a simple solution: FARE™ (Film Automatic Retouching and Enhancement) Level 3. Its built-in retouching technology handles the most common problems found with old negatives and slides. It can remove much of the dust and scratches that may appear on your originals. It can even revive images that have faded over time. Plus, Backlight Correction Technology works to adjust image exposure, and Grain Correction will help smooth out grainy images. Four film adapters. The included film adapters let you scan transparencies and negatives, from 35mm up to 4 x 5 in. formats. You can even batch-scan up to thirty 35mm negative frames or 12 mounted slides.

software limitations
Date: March 2, 2010
Pros: Fast Connectivity, High resolution, High-speed scanning
Cons: software limiting dimensions
Great scanner, but limited by software. Large format negatives, such as X-rays or MRI scans are difficult to preserve as the software works within a number of pre-set formats - e.g 4X5, 35 mm etc. when trying to push the dimensions of the saved image the resulting scan will go black or highly pixelated and is no good. The presets are handy but very limiting. I have been trying to archive many old large images, negatives and the like, and find the software the main source of frustration.

versatile and reliable
Date: November 23, 2009
Pros: easy to use, High resolution
I've used this scanner for the last 4 years to digitize historical photographs and other materials for a public library. I actually have used all of the film adapters, as I have had materials to scan that were odd or oversized negatives (120 film, 4x6 negatives, etc.), slides, color negatives, prints, etc. I even use it to scan microfilm occasionally. I am especially impressed with its ability to convert color negatives. I've scanned at least 3000 images, and other than having to be calibrated periodically, it has never let me down. One problem: with the multi-crop function for batches of film frames, it is difficult to control the order the frames are scanned in.

I've been using this for years on a Win Me system. I like it very much and have a strong feeling of respect for it and the work that went in to producing this product. In use, however, Black & White negative scanning does not come with functions to mask dust and scratches, so it's retouch time big time in that application of this scanner. For color positives and negatives, though, it's a dream machine.

A Real Workhorse
Date: May 31, 2009
Pros: durable, easy to use, excellent software
I have been using the 9950 for over four years. Flatbed scanning is flawless. I bought this model to digitize my slide and photo albums. The transparency/negative scan functionality is also flawless. This machine has survived literally thousands of scans. I now use it to archive receipts and make digital copies of documents. The 9950 is very efficient and sturdy. I recommend it to anyone who needs transparency/negative scan capability. I also bought a Canon SD1100IS Camera. Another excellent product.

Cons: Flimsy Construction
I am using this product for more than an year and I found it very good but the only fault with this scanner is that the kits are quite elegant and should be used very carefully I have broken my platen white board from the top and I am unable to find it anywhere but the whole thong is awesome

Best Scanner I ever bought
Date: November 1, 2008
Using this scanner, I can produce high quality scans of photos, negatives and paper documents, including OCR scans.
I find the product documentation ithat came with the scanner is clear, with enough detail and well organized.
Canon's online documentation is thorough, but voluminous. It usually takes me more time than I expect to find what I need and download it.
Now, I'm upgrading the scanning software, And, it's taking a while to find out if Canon has a new driver for the other vendor's scanning software.
I didn't purchase an automatic document feeder when I first bought the scanner because the scanner and the document feeder together were too much for my budget.
I would like to get the document feeder now, since I am doing scanning and OCR of book-length documents.
