CanoScan LiDE 500F

Pros: Compact Design, durable, Fast Connectivity, High resolution, easy to use
Cons: didn't find any
Small and fits almost anywhere. Scanning negatives surprised me - the twain interface shows the scan a little grainy, but once the scan is complete and you see the end result, WOW!

Excellent Choice
Date: August 11, 2009
Pros: Compact Design, durable, easy to use, Fast Connectivity, High resolution, usb powered
I live on a sailboat where space is at a premium, but I want to be able to do as many things as practical. The LiDE 500F has worked very well for me since 2005. I expect it to last many more years as well. It combines many features in a small space and is USB powered from my laptop so I can carry JUST the laptop and the scanner and a USB cable and use it away from the boat even though there may not be power at the place I want to use it, like some Cyber Cafés. It has been a great choice for my needs. It is faster than my old scanner, but I wish it were even faster. I could not get Canon’s Pre-Sales Rep to tell me ANY actual speed data. FYI: I just scanned a 7.4 x 10.5 inch magazine page of mostly text with two small photos as a TIFF file that turned out to be 20.5MB since it was TIFF. It was set for 300 dpi which is much more than usually needed for text. AutoTone was on, but all other options were off. It took about 16 seconds to scan and about a total of 25 seconds for the whole process including return of the scanner to the beginning. I have no idea what choices might make it faster or slower, but that may give you an idea if speed is important to you. Higher dpi takes longer. Color takes longer. With 100 dpi grayscale, it was about 13 sec. scan & 21 sec. total for full cycle. The included software is very good. I have only used the film scanner a few times, but it worked very well.

Superb Scanner
Date: July 17, 2009
Pros: Compact Design, durable, easy to use, great price
We've had this scanner several years and really put it through severe conditions with salt air on a boat. It is easy to store, extremely reliable, and does great scanned images.
If this one every wears out we'll buy another.
We use it on an Apple and PC and it works great on both.

This is by far the best scanner I have run across.
It is very light scans without having to plug into an electric outlet. It has a great resolution, and it is very inexpensive
