PIXMA MP500

Advanced performance doesn't stop there. AE (Auto Exposure) Copy feature automatically optimizes reproduction quality based on the type of original you're duplicating. When scanning photos or graphics, you'll see highquality 1200-dpi reproduction with vibrant 48-bit color depth. Plus, advanced paper handling provides you with several smart options. The dual paper path allows you to keep photo paper stored in one tray and plain paper in the other - so you can print photos or documents without having to switch paper. You can even print 2 sided reports, saving paper. Large 2.5" LCD viewer, direct printing. With the large 2.5" color LCD viewer you can evaluate your images in beautiful color, then enhance them before printing! Just insert your compatible memory card 3 into a built-in card slot and begin viewing. Long-lasting photos with smart individual ink tanks. The Canon ChromaLife100 system combines the PIXMA MP500 Photo All-In-One's FINE print head technology and newly developed inks with select Canon photo papers, with results rivaling that of many conventional photos. And with the new smart LED ink tanks, your LED lamp flashes when ink is running low, and flashes even faster when nearing empty.

beat purchase ever
Date: February 20, 2010
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, Low Ink Consumption, Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use
I have had this printer for quite a while. Just love it. You can go long periods with out printing and it prints without cleaning heads and cartridges. And the cartridges are not that expensive, since you only buy the one you need. Does photos and duplex. Great photos too. No glitches yet, except had to update drivers for windows 7. All in all a great printer, always ready and can set up for different profiles easily.

Excellent Printer!
Date: December 22, 2009
Pros: Easy Setup, durable, fast print speed, easy to use
I LOVE this printer. Has all the good qualities: a straight paper path, individual ink cartridges, easy to use functions. I hope it never wears out. I have been using it 3 yrs now. Scans great, prints great, works as a stand alone unit for printing & copying. I bought my mom one & she doesn't even own a computer. She uses it to print pictures from her memory card & stuff she wants to copy. Yes, the ink is expensive, but show me a good quality ink that isn't!
I make about 40+ copies of a family calendar (with tons of photos) each year & they turn out great (printed on cardstock, not even photo paper).

Great product
Date: December 13, 2009
Pros: Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, easy to use
Cons: High Ink Consumption
I have 2 of these Printers...one at home and one at a small business. They work great. I am however replacing the one at work do to the fact that we will be starting to print alot more and some of the color lasers cost about 25% per page for ink. I would highly recommend this printer for a home situation due to the price, quality, and dependability....I've had both of them about 4 years now and if I wasn't going to be printing more I would buy another in a hearbeat.

The Reviews Were RIght!
Date: November 14, 2009
Pros: Lightweight/Portable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: ink streaking after a while
I researched this printer and was very happy with its performance for years. Now I'm having the same problem as someone else wrote about in the reviews. I have the ink smearing across the page on about every other line. Anyone find a solution?

Black ink stripes on paper
Date: November 9, 2009
Pros: easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Large Footprint, High Ink Consumption
I'm writing this review in case others have the same problem and maybe someone figured out an answer. After several years of good performance the printer started putting a black stripe of ink down the back of all pages! The ink bleeds through to the front sometimes. I've followed the directions for cleaning it but it didn't help.

Fix Tinting Issues
Date: October 31, 2009
Pros: reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, excellent photo printing
Cons: Large Footprint
This is meant as a helpful tip if you are trying to fix color tinting problems. My printer was not printing yellow though the cartridge indicator was showing it was full. I took out the yellow cartridge and noticed that black ink had backed up into it. I put in a new yellow cartridge and -- problem solved! Lesson learned: if a color is missing when you print the test pattern, check the cartridge for that color -- it may need to be replaced.

Lousy Multifunction
Date: June 30, 2009
Pros: Easy Setup, easy to use, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: High Ink Consumption
For printing pictures, the color is great and does a good job. But used as a multifunction device, it goes through ink way too fast. Also, the scanner is askew so all documents I scan are not squarely reproduced. I would recommend getting a cheap printer for everyday printing of business documents, etc. to save on ink. Ink is very pricey for what you get.

Great Multifunction Printer
Date: June 28, 2009
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption
This is a great product. I've had mine for several years now and not planning to replace it anytime soon. This printer is very reliable and I couldn't tell you how many times the built-in scanner has come in handy. My only gripe is the frequency of replacing the cartridges, it's a little more often then I would prefer. However the quality of photo printing is unmatched by any other consumer multifunction. It pairs great with my Canon EOS 20D DSLR.

MP500 for Light Home Business
Date: June 13, 2009
Pros: Easy Setup, fast print speed, reliable
Cons: High Ink Consumption
Fast dependable printer. I use printer and scanner frequently. Scanner software is too smart. Software crops images incorrectly and works properly upon the first scan. Subsequent scans get cropped in strange and unpredictable ways. I recommend using manual scanner & preview. Color resolution on printer got misaligned and efforts to fix have been futile. Black and white works good, but I can't depend on quality color images. I get a lot of magenta, despite efforts to clean, align etc.

Printer Works Great for Low-Cost
Date: May 14, 2009
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, reliable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, smears ink
Bought this printer several years ago. It's built like a tank making for a large footprint, but isn't too much larger than any other multifunction as it is sized for a full A4 scan. The separate cassette allowing for 2 types of paper to be loaded at any time is a lifesaver as I'm constantly printing both draft stuff and quality output. It does seem to have a problem collecting black ink in the printer and leaving small streaks or smears on printouts. Not too difficult to clean. I would highly recommend this printer to someone looking for mid-quality scanning and printing for a fair price.

MP500 fails and it's expensive
Date: April 30, 2009
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, Flimsy Construction, Difficult Setup, Difficult to use, Slow Print Speed, High Ink Consumption, unreliable
I find that replacing the ink to this and I bellieve most cannon printers is very expensive. The MP500 black ink stopped working. It just shines the light on but I can't find on the manual if this means anything. I bought a new black ink cartdrige and it still doesn't work. I did a cleaning and it still doesn't work. I did another cleaning and it still doesn't work. I would suggest you stay away from Cannon printers.

Midnight scramble
Date: April 27, 2009
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption
I bought this somewhere around midterms in 2006 after my older printer died in the middle of the night while printing an important research paper. It was an impulse buy that has not treated me badly. The scanner is awesome. It prints fast and you can change the settings to fast print to use less ink, plus you can do double sided or multiple pages to one side prints to save paper. It is a little loud, wish it had a fax machine in it, and the ink cartridges are a bit pricey. But it has held up through senior year of college, 2 moves across country, kids, storage... I love this printer for it's durability and sexy ;) design.

Love it.
Date: February 16, 2009
Pros: durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, field opions
I looked around the stores for a printer that could do the jobs I needed to do. My hard copy files were getting out of hand. Love the PDF save mode after I copy them.
You can even add files to the saved PDF file. Another feature I like is the Easy-WebPrint in the Windows Internte Explore. One click and I get high speed Print. Also the Crop tool in the copy Window, fast and easy.
I did some photos, looked sharp and bold.

Great Printer/Scanner/Copier
Date: February 7, 2009
Pros: Compact Design, durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors, individual ink tanks
WE have had the MP500 for over 4 yrs and the only problem we have had is that the circuit board went out. Called Canon and had it replaced within a week. Local shop that fixed it said they had never seen one, that says something in itself. I love the photos that come out of it! My wife is a scrapbooker and she prints the majority of her stuff on this printer. The scanning is flawless, love the feature of put the photo in and hit the button and it saves it to the computer for me. The copier is great to have and we have used it many times. We have used it with many different papers and they all work great with the Canon Ink. As a professional Photographer I can say I love this Multi Function. For those who complain about Ink prices, DON'T it's expensive. This printer uses less ink than other printers I have used for office and photo printing.

Great quality & features at a premium cost
Date: January 25, 2009
Pros: reliable
Cons: Large Footprint, High Ink Consumption
I've had this printer for a few years now. Love the automatic duplex printing function. Huge downside is the very expensive ink cartridges, but thats with most printer. I originally bought it thinking if I just print in grayscale at all times that I would only have to buy black cartridges. Not so, even tho I print primarily grayscale, the color cartridges go too.

Printer works flawlessly- until you replace the ink tanks. I replaced the PGI 5 black ink and now cannot print any documents, color or black text only. The MP 500 makes a great paper weight, both large and heavy. If you never need to replace the original factory ink you'll probably be okay. Supposedly this printer uses minimal ink. I doubt I printed even 25 pages of simple text before the ink ran out. Now it's useless since the Canon brand ink tanks don't work. What a value.

Best Multi-Function Printer
Date: December 27, 2008
Pros: Compact Design, Lightweight/Portable, durable, Easy Setup, easy to use, fast print speed, Low Ink Consumption, reliable, Sharp Tones & Colors
We really like this multi-function printer. I've used the scanner a few times with ease. It prints wonderful pictures as well. We started out with Windows XP OS, then we just upgraded our computer and it has Vista 64. It was simple to set up. Just had to go in and find our printer and look up the driver down load we needed and from there is was a breeze...now that it's done (LOL). But really, it wasn't too difficult to get it set up for Vista.
Will deffinately reccomend!
