WIsh I would have skipped the Office Depot Sale
Date: March 3, 2010
Cons: Difficult to use, Difficult Setup, unreliable, Flimsy Construction, scanner is useless
The only reason I have not "Office Space'd" this printer/scanner/fax is I have not freed up enough money to purchase a full priced multi that will work well.
The Scanner-- I really have no idea why Canon even added this. Without it, it would be a decent and cheap printer. With it, it fails at its purpose. The scanner takes forever to figure out how to install. The worst of everything is the fact that this has a feeder tray, but, when it scans it puts each page as an individual document. So unless you have a program to merge pdf you will not have one document from your scan. Second, I have yet to get an 8x10 page to actually scan into an 8x10 printable file. So, useless if you are scanning so it can be printed in the future. Finally, there is no way to get the file to be a "small" sized file-- I'm talking 10 MB for a legal size page. I have not found the trick to reduce the size yet after days of attempts.

Great Machine and Workhorse
Date: January 16, 2010
Pros: reliable, Easy Setup, durable, High Quality Output, fast print speed, easy to use
I bought this product for use as a home/office network printer. I have a few Macs and PC's in the home and needed something for both (save money and upgrade to fast laser). This thing is blazing for home use. Right out of the box within 30 minutes, I had this thing working for the 2 Macs and 2 PC's in the house. It has an automatic Energy Saver functions and when you send a print, it automatically turn on and prints. The fax function worked like any other fax today. The scanning was great on the PC, Mac scanning requires USB, but at for the price I can live with that. I can always scan on the PC and transfer the file over my network hub, scanning was not my priority because I only do it once every few months. Me and my family love this machine. This is a quality made product with lots of options.

Connect to USB and Network Together
Date: October 15, 2009
Pros: High Quality Output, fast print speed, fast scanning, both direct usb & network printing scanning
Cons: setup manuals don't state dual hookup
Many have commented on the difficulty of setting up the Canon D480. The manuals and setup instructions fail to point out that you can (and should) hook up the printer to USB for local connection to a PC and also the network connection for printing to from any PC on your network.
Network scanning functionality is limited to the Scangear utility, while USB is much more flexible. Do this: If you want network access for printing (and sending scanned jobs to remote PCs), install the network software, using the latest version from the website. Assign an IP to the printer so it can be seen on your network. Then install the USB software and plugging in the printer so it is recognized and the drivers are installed.
TO SCAN FIRST PUSH ENERGY SAVER TO EXIT THIS MODE, THEN YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY PUSH THE SCAN BUTTON TWICE TO GET TO USB MODE FOR SCANNING. ONLY NOW, START YOUR APPLICATION AND PICK THE D480 SCANNER TO SCAN FROM. IF YOU ARE SLOW, YOU WILL HAVE TO PUSH THE SCAN BUTTON MANUALLY AGAIN AS IT REVERTS TO COPY. (YOU CAN CHANGE THIS BY GOING INTO THE MENU AND SETTING THE INITIAL SETTING FROM COPY TO SCANNING).
This is the secret to scanning locally with full functionality from all your applications and also being able to print from any PC on your network using the IP address and network capability. (BOTH connections are needed simultaneously on the back of the printer.)
It is a very good unit, but the documentation misses this obvious issue that has caused much trouble for users, and clearly hurt the reputation of this otherwise great multifunction.

Imageclass D480
Date: September 20, 2009
Pros: High Quality Output, fast print speed, Easy Setup, easy to use, Small Footprint, ez paper-jam accessability
Just bought the copier today. Easy to set up for regular copying. Network a little outdated (no WIFI) Copy quality was very good.
I especially like the easy access in case of paper jams. The Canon P-series I'm replacing was extremely difficult to get at for jams and damage could occur when trying. This one's much better.

Spent 5 hours on the phone with tech support trying to get the print driver setup. Computer would not recognize the printer with it hooked to a USB port. Ended up having to hook it up as a network printer after we were unable to make it work otherwise.

Cons: Difficult Setup, Difficult to use, incomplete features
Don't plan on using the scanning functions -- it's terrible. Using the network scanning barely works. Each page takes 1 minute and IT WILL ONLY SCAN 1 PAGE AT A TIME!! It has a document feeder but only scans the first page.
Mre than that, you have to scan from the application, then run over to the printer to press the scan button, then back to the PC to start the scan. And if you are not fast enough -- it terminates the scan or the application.
Really bad.

Response from Canon:By Internet MarketingNovember 5, 2009
For customers who may experience a quick timeout during scanning, please update using Firmware V072 from the Drivers & Downloads tab on the consumer site to address your concern. We apologize for the inconvenience. Thank you, Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Solid network unit
Date: February 19, 2009
Pros: fast print speed, reliable
Bought to replace an existing MFC as Canon's single toner cartridge is cheaper to operate. Great as a copier/printer with many features, fast print, and easy installation, works under Windows 7. Pages curl coming out of the printer, but to date this has not caused a jam.
Network scan is very tricky. Canon's software does not support network scanning, an oddity to say the least. The manuals are very perplexing, to put it mildly, that's the reason for this review. VueScan does not work as no scanner driver is installed. Fortunately, some software (I use XnView but others may also work) can acquire images. Using XnView you must select "acquire image" rather than "acquire image from scanner" due to the absence of any scanner driver.
While it works, network scanning is cumbersome, not the kind of "plug and play" where one hits a button to scan to PDF. XnView is rich in features so this gives some trade off for the difficulties, but if I did lots of network scanning I would keep my older MFC. On the plus side, the D480 does not install drivers or consume memory in the networked devices. So, if you only scan occasionally the D480 is better.
I purchased with a significant rebate, without which I would not consider it as good as a value. But is quiet, the power save works. Overall this is a solid performer which performs very well.

Scanner Issue
Date: February 18, 2009
Pros: High Quality Output, fast print speed
Cons: Difficult Setup
Overall this appears to be a good machine. I have not used it that much, but I feel people ought to be aware of what they are buying.
Concerning scanning, there can be a small issue. This printer is designed for network connection. So it's default mode for scanning is "network scanning". If you are using a simple USB cable to hook to this printer. It will not automatically scan your document. You have to manually push the scan button twice to bring it to "USB Scanning". Then your computer will recognize it. The big problem is that there is no way to change this default mode. If it sets for 30 seconds and goes back to copy mode, the next time you want to scan, you will have to hit the scan button again twice; otherwise your computer will not communicate with the scanner. You can not change the default canning mode to USB. It will always go back to Network.
The only fix I have found is to set the general functions of the printer to think that it is a scanner, rather than a copier. Then once you have turned the printer on and hit the scan button twice, it will remain in USB mode as long as it is turned on, or until you hit the fax button or copier button. Once the power is turned off, the next time you turn it on and want to scan, you will have to hit the scan button twice again.
It would have been nice to know this before I bought it. But unfortunately there is no way to tell this until you bought it, took it home and hooked it up.
In my opinion, Canon should have either designed the machine so you had a choice how you wanted to scan, or clearly marked in its technical specs that this is the way the machine works.
