Problems with the 50D Date: March 26, 2009
Although I really love this camera, I have found a problem with the main dial. It has gotten stuck on a particular ISO and would not change. Then as suddenly as that happened, it went away. Now I've found that I can't get it back to ISO 100 after using the highlight tone priority. As I'm a professional photographer, this problem is quite serious to me.

Best camera I ever owned Date: March 22, 2009
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, what else is there to add?
Cons: do not have any

There are not enough words in the English lanquage to describe this camera. Like the images coming from this new chip! Like the C/Fn extra functions to tweek the camera. The 50D has the highest resolution per square mm. of the entire Canon EOS line. This camera has 45455 pixels per square mm as compared to 24422 pixels for the 5D and the 1D mark III. How much better picture quality those cameras deliver, I do not know but the 50D picture quality is simply - outstanding -! This camera is a pleasure to own!

Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation
Cons: none so far

I love this camera! Upgraded from the Rebel Xti and I'm glad I did. This camera gives me much more room to grow as a budding photographer. I didn't think that the increase in the fps from the Rebel Xti would be that big of a deal until I took pictures of my son's baseball game. Now I'm the official team photographer. Be sure that you have the lenses that can keep with this camera and you will not be disappointed.

Love this camera, especially with L lenses Date: March 18, 2009
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, easy to use
Cons: requires top quality lenses

I am very pleased with this camera. It is a great upgrade from my 20D. At first, I was not happy with the image quality using the EF-S18-200 IS lens, or my EF-S 17-85 IS, so I bought the EF 24-105 L lens. I also shoot with the 100-400 L lens. The L lenses really improve image quality! I am now very pleased that I chose this camera over full frame. It's perfect for sports, wildlife and family photos!

This is my first DSLR and frankly I am blown away by the performance. I have been using point and shoots for years and I am astounded by the difference in IQ. I cannot see how anyone could not shoot fantastic pics with this fine piece of equipment. Having owned it for a couple of months I am still learning its capabilities which are many. I love the resolution on the LCD and the fast FPS are great for wildlife but I must admit I bought the camera because it simply felt great in my hands. I purchased my 50D with the 18-200mm kit and I cannot wait till I can pick up some L series lenses. Buy it you will love it .

I've had my Canon EOS 50D for about a week. Now I'm no pro, not by a long shot and I am taking pictures that are blowing away every one who sees them. Changing the settings is easy and I am learning to take great pictures just by playing with the infinite combinations. You won't be disappointed here.

This camera has Excellent Quality images. I am a professional commercial photographer. The Images have good details and very sharp. I took a picture of a can food for one of my jobs. I saw the fine dots on the color print on the can. The Quality is very close as shooting 35mm film camer. I almost can not see any different from the professional 35mm film camer and the 50D.

The 50D feels great in your hands...rock solid...but heavy with a big lens. Controls are well laid out and menu navigation is relatively easy. Picture quality is great but need a high quality lens to take advantage of the greater resolution. 14bit a/d color conversion gives smooth color rendition. Good image noise control at high ISO.

Incredible Camera Date: February 23, 2009
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use

After 35 years of Canon 35MM film (AE1, T70, Elan 2E) I made the switch to digital with the new Canon 50D. I love the bulk of the camera and how incredibly easy it is to shoot. I have only had the camera for about two months and have already created over 700 images. Many are low light wildlife shots, as well as a lot of Christmas lights shot without flash. I have found the low light images to be very low on digital noise even when dialing up the ISO to 1600.
The camera is ready to shoot right out of the box. By the time the battery was fully charged I had read most of the owner’s manual and familiarized myself with the major controls. I shoot most of my nature shots in RAW and then finish on the computer. I have had to do little adjusting other than converting to jpeg or making the image smaller for printing. The camera is that easy to use and the images are extremely high quality.
I have used enough of the 50D’s features to be able to switch ISO, white balance, AF, AE, and other functions with ease. The auto bracketing feature is a favorite for scenic nature shots and adjusting the f-stops altered automatically is an easy menu change. The 6 frames per second was useful in capturing a coyote hunting his lunch in Rocky Mountain National Park a few weeks back. I was able to capture the hunt, crawl, jump, catch, and consume with very clear sharply focused images.
All in all, at 15.1 megapixels, this is all the camera a beginner through serious amateur and semi-pro needs.

Best Bang for the Buck Date: February 23, 2009
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Nice features/settings, Solid Operation
Cons: noisy

This is worth every penny! I upgraded from an XTi and you can immediately see a large improvement in build quality as well as picture quality. The controls are well laid out and numerous in ability. Use UDMA flash card only, otherwise you will be hampered by slow performance. With the appropriate card, it is very zippy. I was so happy with this product, I am considering purchasing a second and getting rid of the XTi altogether.

Incredibly disappointed Date: February 22, 2009
Pros: quiet, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Poor image quality

While the price and feature list was great, the picture quality is horrible. All pictures taken with the 50D were soft or seemingly out of focus. I've tried it with Canon lenses 85mm 1.8, 24-70 2.8, and 70-200 2.8 IS and the results are the same; soft unusable photos. Every shot taken with this camera had been thrown away. Thank God I didn't trade in my 20D. I'm sending in my 50D for service. Perhaps I got a bad copy? Based on my experience, I would NOT RECOMMEND this camera at all.

Love it!! Date: February 22, 2009
Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life, fast burst rate
Cons: digital noise at high iso

I'm not a hard-core D-SLR user but I've used an old digital Rebel and a 20-D for the last few years and I must say that the 50-D is fabulous in comparison. It is extremely fast, feature-rich, and the display is large, clear and bright. I use it mostly with my 24-105 IS lens and find that that combo meets 75% of my needs. I'm getting great results. The only negative thing I would say about it is that at very high ISO the noise is more than I had expected, based on the marketing writeups (even with the noise reduction function enabled).

Excellent Camera Date: February 20, 2009
Pros: excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, good battery life
Cons: Missing features/settings

I have used the 50D for about 2 months, and have made about 1000 images. I hae been very pleased with this camera.

The autofocus is quick and accurate. This is important to me because I like to photograph birds, and many times they are moving quickly and even erratically. The back LCD is bright and easier to see than those of my other Canon cameras (20D and 40D).

The Print/Share button, which I never used and whose function couldn't be changed on the 40D now can be used to activate Live View, which I find useful for macros and landscapes.

Image quality is very good for the size prints I make (16 x 20).

The manual could be improved. For example, the 50D has two custom settings in addition to the usual P, Tv, Av, M, and A-DEP. Each of these can be used to have customized settings. I have one set for Live View settings. However, I have not been able to figure out how to avoid setting the aperture, for example, in the Custom button. So it continues to revert to whatever it was when I created the settings for that Mode. I guess I'd better consult with the support folks and learn how to do that.

To keep this review brief, let me say that I like everything about my 50D camera with two reservations. One, I wish its weather proofing were up to the standards of the pro models. I am a nature photographer and it rains and snows. Two, I wish Auto Exposure Bracketing would allow 3 stops instead of just 2 stops plus and minus. The addition would improve HDR range. On the other hand, the Function Button (not present on the 40D) can be programmed to instantly give AEB, which is very convenient.

In summary, a very good camera, I am very pleased with it, and would recommend it to anyone at my level of photography.

I would not consider myself even amateur photographer, but I can tell you, without a doubt, that if you remotely have an idea about quality, then this is the camera for you. As soon as you hold your own 50 D, you realize this is probably the best decision you've made beside your marriage and your home...any you may questioning the latter.

After getting familiar with controls, you take you first real "photo" with this impressive work of art. "WOW," you say to yourself and try to sell the photo of your dog to Natural Geographic. That's how impress you will be. Don't take my word for it, just look at the front page of Natural Geographic...just kidding.

Seriously, this machine is well built. It is Effortless to operate when you become accustomed to the controls. Any who complaints about the "shakes" must just be nervous to be holding such an awesome machine. I can easily maneuver between my shutter speed and aperture with minimal effort. The Live View is a great addition. I'm a perfectionist, so having the ability to preview before the actual shot is nice. I can go on and on, but just go buy one if its in your budget. Yes, be economically responsible to yourself. No point of having the Cadillac in your garage if you can't afford the gas.

Cons: Short battery life

Having used the XT XSi 20D and 30D, I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of this camera. The build feels rock solid, the viewfinder bright and large and the features are just a knock out.

My work is web based, so I have no need for a full frame camera, but I work with these cameras while rock-climbing, on surf beaches, in driving snow and rain, and they never miss a beat.

I also use the Canon iPF5100 printer and I find the perfect matching set that allows me to shoot at dawn, edit and print before the Gallery door opens.

Another key element in an amazing system!
