Pros: awesome resolution, superior build, battery life, weather sealed, size of the camera
Cons: small screen, complicated controls
The 1ds Mark II is a PROFESSIONAL camera. It has all the features that a high-end photographer needs. Like firewire tethering, weather sealing, dual card slots & large batteries. Before I purchased this camera, I did a ton of research by comparing it to the 5D Mark II. The 5D is a awesome camera, but it's not good enough for a professional. Think about it, you shouldn't be buying your camera gear of the shelves of Walmart. As a fashion photographer I would never use over 800 iso, so I don't need the extra bump in iso. Clients are excited when you carry around a large camera around like this. Plus, it's lighter than any medium format camera. My images with this camera are out very natural, not over-saturated. I HIGHLY recommend this camera.

Cons: Complicated controls/menu
Have owned it for 4 years now. I wish it had 100,000 ISO performance, but that's it. I have done everything with this body. From sitting in a blind all day at -5 degrees F, 2-3 thousand shot weddings, you name it it has done it without flinching once. I shoot some at 1600 and have never once had a complaint on image quality. The autofocus is stellar.

Before this camera, I owned a canon 40D and after the 5D Mark II was launched in 2008 I got my self a FF 5D Mark II. Why I bought a "OLD" 1Ds Mark II?
Good question. I think the answer is pretty simple. The 5D Mark II is just not good enough. It's nice camera, but here are some reasons why I bought the 1Ds Mark II after owing both 40D and 5D Mark II (By priority):
1. 45 AF point instead of 11 AF point (+ 6 hidden). This is probably why so many Pros like the 1Ds so much.
2. 100% * 100% view finder compare to 98% * 98%.
3. Higher Sync speed when useing E-TTL II Flash. 1/250 vs 1/200.
4. Superior build qulity. I had bad experence with the BG-E6 girp for the 5D Mark II the gear inside was borken! With the 1Ds series you have the built in vertical grip and there is no gap between the body and grip.
5. The price is only 1/3 compare to 2004 when it was launched. 1Ds cameras was designed for high end users but 5D Mark II is not. Hate to say so but if you compare them side by side it's easy to tell.

Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, good battery life, tough!!!!!!!!!!!!
I purchased this camera after waiting on a list for the 5d Mark II. I had not previously considered it due to it's price, but now it is selling for about the price of the 5d mark II. While it has a small 2" screen and doesn't take movies and has about 5mp less resolution, it was a better product for my use. The images are fantastic when coupled with L lenses, the camera has many features the 5d doesn't have like multiple spot metering, dual card capability, not to mention superior wb controls and autofocus speed. I use mine in a maritime enviroment in Alaska and the build quality and toughness are so vastly superior to the 5d range. I doubt the 5mp resolution difference is significant. I don't generally use the higher ISO settings so don't miss the reportedly better low noise of the 5D mark II. I definitely don't see any black dots in the highlights. As far as video, I also wasn't interested in that. This is a great pro level camera with all the bells and whistles, and tough as nails. If you don't need to be dangling the latest and greatest this is the one for you.
