Cons: Missing features/settings, grip is too shallow
First DSLR I purchased (coming from a P&S of different maker) back in 2005.
It delivered everything I asked it to do and with the help of a good lens, it was sometimes shooting better than the 40D.
My ratings are low due to the standard now (2012) but if you are looking at jumping into photography and don't need video, no money, and don't know if photography will be a continuing hobby, an old rebel such as this one will work wonders.
Only thing I didn't like about it was the grip size. After holding the 40D, the rebel series seems too small for even my hands.

Pros: great pictures, reliable, rugged, fast frame rate
I use my camera for personal use. Weddings, vacations, kids stuff. In short, This is a rugged camera - does not need to be pampered. Takes excellent pictures from in all types of settings - sports (quick frame rate),stills for weddings (outstanding), everyday use (unbeatable) I will use this till it falls apart (ha probably never) then buy another :)

Pros: everything about it!
Cons: zero.
I have been using this camera for about a year. I am amazed at its quality photos and the fine details they have. It is by far the best camera I have ever used or hoped for. The weight is what sold me on it, but the photo quality and its versatility has made me a canon fan for life. It is the only camera I want to use. I love it!!

I've had this camera since 2006, and, while I now have a 5D and a 5D Mark2, the Rebel is my go-to camera for around the house, around town and around nature. It's light-weight, super easy and fast to control settings. I always shoot RAW and do any image adjusting later. Coupled with the Canon 17-85mm IS the images have been used in large color brochures with superb results. This camera once suffered the indignity (along with me) of a total dunking in a muddy NC stream. To my horror there was water sloshing in the lens! I took everything apart on my kitchen table, dried the parts carefully and reassembled them. I've never seen a sign of even a speck of dust an any image since. It's not waterproof and I don't recommend the dunk test...but all in all it's a fantastic camera!

Pros: good battery life, quiet, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, excellent image quality, Superior build quality, Bright LCD, Solid Operation, Simple controls/menu
Cons: original cd download
Product works great. Produces exceptional pictures, Menu system delivered by firmware is intuitive and easy to use. Interchangeable lenses are easy to find and many 3rd party lenses will also work. The only problem with the camera is uploads to the computer are a little slow but easy to live with. The only major problem is with Canon's web site, in particular the ability to download drivers. If you have misplaced your original camera CD or lost it, you are out of luck as can will only let you download updated files. To get the drivers you have to go to a third party site where you have to register and pay so much a year to get the files. I think Canon should have an ISO image of the original disk available to camera owners. If you do not own a Digital Rebel the CD image would be useless to you, so I do not see a problem with this approach. Camera = A to A- Download site C+ at best. Chuck

Cons: dust issues in the view finder
I don't really have anything special to say. I bought the XT a few years back and have never regretted it. the only things I've come across that didn't work well is extreme low lighting (moon pictures with a big zoom) and some over exposure in bright conditions all later could be attributed to settings rather than a camera problem.

I've had this camera for almost a year, it is my 1st D-SLR so I was quite excited to get it, regardless of it's age. For a first time camera, it is almost everything I could hope for. It works really well in outdoor settings, or in brightly lit rooms, but not too well in the dark. Indoors my ISO is almost always 800 or 1600. Other than that, I'm completely happy with it!

Cons: control layout
I've had this XT since Christmas, 2005. Overall it has been great. Some minor design flaws seem to have been corrected in later models.
One flaw is accidentally hitting the "Shutter Delay" without realizing it until after the moment has passed. The LCD could be larger.
The battery is long lasting. The weight feels good. It is relatively quiet, but could be quieter.

I purchased this camera when still in college right before the price drop and the new 10mp rebel came out. so i was disapointed in the price at the time, but that never stopped me from pushing the camera to its full extent. The rebel system was so easy to figure out without even looking at the manual. This was a great camera at the time and still is today. But i would recommend to buy the newer rebel XTi it is definatly worth the money. i have only had it a few days and love it. Cannon is great and i now own 3 rebels and all of them work great! the product was built to last.

Pros: good battery life, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, Solid Operation, easy to use
Cons: have not found one
Purchased this camera in mid-2005 with 18-55mm, 28-90mm and 70-300mm zoom, and a Speedlite 420EX flash unit after I went on an Alaskan cruise with a point and shoot digital and became frustrated with the digital lag of the point & shoot. Have taken pictures from sea level to over 14,000 feet, hot or cold, rain or shine without a single malfunction other than those created by the operator. You can take pictures in the most basic manual mode or in fully automatic mode where the camera does all the work. The burst mode is great for taking pictures of the grandchildren running and playing. I have enjoyed every picture I have taken with this camera.

Pros: good battery life, Quick Start-up time, Superior build quality, easy to use
Cons: Dim LCD, Poor image quality, noisy, Heavy/Bulky
Sturdy and reliable. This camera is really strong and able to take some abuse. I have had this camera for about 3 years and it has never broken or been in need of a repair.
Though strong, I have some issues with the quality of images. I don't know if it's the AF or the kit lens or camera, but my images are lackluster in color and sharpness. This is definitely a high-light camera.
Unfortunately, in the current era this is far too behind to compete with the others.
It's a great price, but I would recommend the XSi or XTi even because I'm a huge fan of the Rebel's.

After using the Canon EOS Rebel SLR 35mm camera for 17 years, it finally went kaput. I bought the new EOS Rebel XT because I really liked my old camera and by buying the same thing, I wouldn't have to buy new lenses. Camera works great but I have one problem with it. Unlike the old film camera, the digital does NOT have the multiple exposure (ME) feature. That is a good feature to make some fun pictures and I wish the digital cameras had that feature like the old film type did

Been shooting with this camera for 6+ years i believe. It's built like a tank. This camera is great for outdoor sunny day photos and well lite indoor shooting, however, it's not that great with low light shooting. A flash is highly recommended if you purchase this camera. The photos get real grainy when using 1600, but then again, it isn't built like the pros. A great all around camera. It could use a better kit lens, but it's good to buy a new lens anyways. All in all, very satisfied. A great starter camera to learn the essentials of shooting...this is where canon gets ya...they start you off just getting a feel of the EOS world, then later you are wanting more and end up buying the more higher-end EOS cameras and L lenses.....it's a beautiful marketing strategy.

I've owned this camera now for 4 years. Although I've now got a 5d2, this camera still is a an absolute joy to use. The greatest thing about it is its size. With a wide or normal prime lens, it is very discrete and unobtrusive. Not to mention, I could carry it around for hours without feeling a bit tired. Exposure and color are typically spot on. Sure I love the resolution of the 5d2, but for web purposes and small to somewhat-large prints, the Rebel XT is more than enough.

I use this camera primarily for scenic photography in Alaska. This fall, I used it with the Canon 55 - 250mm IS wide-angle lens, and set at ISO 100. Five of these photos were entered into a local phone company's contest for phone book cover and 2010 calendar images. So far, one of the scenic images has won selection for the calendar. This attests to the professional quality images that this DSLR produces. I also used this camera to take 335 images at a recent wedding event. All photos were of the highest quality; had it set to ISO 400 in AF mode.

Cons: Dim LCD, Short battery life
I've been using this camera for 3 to 4 years now. I also use a 5d and a 5d Mark II for my documentary work. I can't say enough good things about this camera. I have put it to the tests, having used it in the field for over a year to do the photo-illustration for an outdoor guidebook, in the rain and snow and other sorts of ick. It has done nothing but help me out.
The camera's weakness is that the images are a little noisy at 1600 ISO, which is to be expected with 8 megapixels. But generally they are crisp, even for print publication or for large prints (I have gone as big as 16 x 20 inches with no problems). The obvious big benefit is that the camera is small and light. It is a good choice for carrying for long periods and is great for candid shots.
Some reviewers have noted that the camera is noisy. I assume that must mean image quality at high ISO, because operationally (mechanically) the camera is pretty quiet for an SLR. (Compare it to one of the big ones). It is not a camera you would buy as a one for sole use in professional contexts (there are others that offer a lot more features). But as a backup, or for use in contexts where a big, loud SLR isn't appropriate, or for situations where you have to carry a camera and gear for long distances, you cant beat it. I take mine with me everywhere, and in spite of having two of the full frame models, I find occasions to use it often.
Regarding the short battery life: the batteries are small, and comparatively cheap. I find that one battery does well shooting RAW for a complete 2 gb card plus.

I am an aspiring photographer, and this camera is so wonderful, I love it! I haven't experienced other cameras, but I read reviews and some people thought it was noisy.. I think it's fine. I really like the manual setting; I don't know much about cameras, but I find this setting very user-friendly. The only thing I don't like is the lense it comes with, it has a .9ft zoom. But I know that it's just the switch of a lense, so it's not much of a problem.

Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Bright LCD, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, availibility of extra lenses/equipment
Cons: noisy
I picked up the Digital Rebal XT several years ago. I found that it is very easy to use and there is a large selection of equipment that can be added. I have picked up extra lenses and teleconverters to use. I have used this camera for pictures at the Nascar races, NFL games, family get togethers and anything else we have wanted to take pictures of. The battery life of the Canon battery is good, but other battery brands to not hold a charge as long or even have a life as long as the Canon batteries. We have always been able to get very clear and sharp pictures. The only problems I have had was using it in a deer blind. It did make a bit too much noise that the deer did hear.
