PIXMA MP830

A Print-Copy-Scan-Fax powerhouse. The ultra-versatile PIXMA MP830 Office All-In-One delivers spectacular performance for the home and small office. It produces an amazing print resolution of up to 9600 x 2400 color dpi 1 , for superb detail and clarity. To achieve this, Canon Full-photolithography Inkjet Nozzle Engineering (FINE) uses a next-generation 3,584-nozzle print head that ejects precise, consistent droplets as small as 1 picoliter, for smooth, virtually grain-free images. Our ContrastPLUS 5-color ink system- four dye based inks and a pigment-based black ink- produces true-life photos along with laser-quality text. Plus, a 4" x 6" photo lab quality borderless print takes only about 36 seconds 2 . With the large 2.5" LCD color viewer and easy control panel, you can evaluate and enhance images from your compatible memory card 3 before printing! Or, you can print directly from your PictBridge ready digital camera or DV camcorder. With direct printing, you don't need a computer.

Pros: long lasting
Cons: ink expensive
Purchased printer in 2006 to replace another Canon that had lasted 5 years. No problems until now, a thick black line appears on the first few pages of printing then gradually disappears. We do lots of greeting cards and coupons prints with it and does very well. Will have it looked at as soon as we find someone who works on multi-purpose printers.

I am getting rid of this monster. It sucks ink like there's no tomorrow and it won't do any of the functions unless none of the ink cartridges are empty. In other words, it won't print black if the cyan cartridge is empty. The cartridges have chips on them that apparently are dated so even if you're not out of ink, it shuts down after a certain amount of time. And you can't buy generic ink because of the chips. It is the worst printer I've ever had. The scanner is slow, too and it is slow to warm up. I will NEVER buy another Canon printer!!

I owned the Canon MP 830 for 2 years now and had to sell it because the ink cartridge is way too expensive!!! The machine itself has nice features.

As many others have said this printer sucks up ink like no other printer I've ever used.
Now it is the print head, for the second time. Last time we were able to clean it, and now it won't work at all. This should not happen to a printer that is only 2 1/2 years old and it used in a home office setting.
This is my first and last Canon printer.

Pros: it's a multi-function machine
Cons: did not last long
I was happy with the Canon Pixma MP830 when I first purchased it. But after about 2 1/2 years, it quit printing black ink. Canon says its probably the print head. Estimated cost to get a replacement print head installed is a little over half of what I paid for this printer. The nearest service facility is about 60 miles from my town. Have not decided if I'm getting it repaired or pitch it and buy another printer.

Like Leo below, mine just gave up on printing black. Everything else is fine. No amount of cleaning/maintenance will fix it. Makes it pretty much useless after two years.

Cons: High Ink Consumption
Great printer. It does eat through ink - but hey, they all do right? It is durable...reliable and works everytime. In addition - the generic ink cartridges work pretty well...so you can get those for about $7/ea - I have had mine for 3yrs and it is a work horse. I had a couple laser printers that keep busting out - and so I have to do billing with this all the time - I went to just this printer about a year ago and I have had NO problems.

just returned from an office supply store where I again spent over sixty dollars for a set of 4 ink cartridges. This seems to takes place every other month and the machine is only used in the home. After this set is used the machine will be thrown out because it would not be right to donate it to a thrft store. This was my first Canon printer and it will definately be my last.

Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Lightweight/Portable, easy to use
Cons: High Ink Consumption
I used this printer for about 2+ years in a small law office, so it got alot of use. It never broke down until the waste ink depository filled up and the machine quit working. It was not worth the cost of fixing so I bought another printer. Overall this printer works very well, color photos are pretty good. My main complaint was the speed in which it ate up ink and the cost of replacing the ink. The ink cartridges would signal Out of Ink long before it was actually used up- I just kept pushing the button to continue printing. In spite of generally good performance of this machine- the high ink consumption along with the high cost of the ink killed my enthusiasm. I have gone over to the side of solid ink technology and will likely lower my overall printing costs 75-90%. If you have a lot of printing to do, this is NOT your machine. however, would be great for home use.

Pros: reliable, Compact Design, Easy Setup, durable, Sharp Tones & Colors, easy to use, duplex & manual scanning very easy!!!
Since 2007, used printer for 150 page Thesis that took a year with a high volumne of scanning and printing. Best feature is it's ease-of-use followed by it's scanning and printing of color and black & white text and photo documents. No real usage of color photo printing and scanning, so I cannot provide an objective review there. Printed hundreds of copies at one time as well, so I have not had the issues other have had. Those that buy this unit for a business are not looking in the right place as this is not a high rate / high durable printer needed in business environments, whether home or at the office. In summary, with almost four years of experience, I've had superior reliability at a realively high quality yeild. Yes, I recommend this product.

Cons: unreliable, High Ink Consumption
For a small business this is not the copier you need. This would work fine for very, very small jobs of less than 10 pages. Duplexing is a feature that is not usable on this machine. In the shop twice still duplexing didn't work right. The ink is very expensive with little yield. For the price there are many other machines that can do the job for less cost and less hassle.

Pros: Easy Setup, durable, fast print speed
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption
I researched many printers before my purchase. I do like the sd card slot and use it a lot. The scanner feature is nice also. My only complaint is how much ink the printer actually uses. I print a lot of pages for my children as they do school online and are required to print out tests and quizzes. The amount of pages that I should be able to print out per cartridge of black in compared to what I actually get does not compare and in todays economy it has really been hard to keep up with the amount of ink I've had to purchase. If your don't print a lot or only want to print photos then it's a nice printer, especially if you don't mind buying all of the ink cartridges.

I have used the Mp830 for 2 plus years now and it has not missed a beat. Early on I learned how to refill my own catridges with 100% success rate, saving huge replacemetn ink costs. I check each cartridge each month fo its ink level and fill thiose that need it. I run Win 7 and upgraded all the drivers, firm ware and software and things work even better than before.
There is a lot of plastic and I treeat it with some respect so as not to break anything. All in all I am thrilled with it.

I have had this printer for more than two years. I know for a fact when this baby dies I will cry my eyes out. It has been an awesome machine for me! I love the scan to pdf/ jpg function. If you can't figure out how to use it RTFM. Sure the foot print is big and the machine is bulky, but what the heck do you expect it's an all in one machine not a cell phone..

Pros: Sharp Tones & Colors, fast print speed, easy to use, excellent scanning clearity
Cons: Large Footprint, Heavy/Bulky, High Ink Consumption, Flimsy Construction, designed as throw away
The Good:
When my wife and I set up our home office we looked at different reviews and the MP830 was well received when it first came out. We have used it in our home office for about 3 years. To be fair, it has performed reasonably well as far as print quality and scanning various items. We print mostly text set to grayscale as the default. It does use an extraordinary amount of colored ink even set to grayscale and according to the service and repair manual it has to do so constantly to keep it’s ink jets wet with ink so they won’t dry out. As a result after extended use old ink builds up around the sponges over where the carriage parks itself during self cleaning mode and when it is shut off. This gets thick enough so that if it is not physically cleaned out the print head will begin dragging ink back onto the page.
The Bad:
All that was OK until just last week when paper began jamming. After much looking and head scratching I deduced that a tiny plastic support of some kind had broken or come loose inside the paper feeder. You would think that it would be a reasonably straightforward job to take the printer apart, fix the broken part and put it back together. It is not.
The less than beautiful:
This particular product is designed as a throw-away. It is more expensive to replace the paper feeder on this unit than to buy a completely new machine of only slightly lower function. I don’t know if all other printer manufacturers do business like this but I am hoping that after I do a lot more research into which products are built to last, that I find a printer which works well and is also well built and serviceable.

I have owned previous Canon printers and was very pleased, but this model doesn't measure up.
I detest the fact I have to set the print settings every time I print a document. I have found no way to change the default print settings to reflect my preference.
The duplex scanner is rather slow and frequently jams.
I would NOT buy this model again.

Cons: Large Footprint, unreliable, High Ink Consumption, black ink printing problems
When I first purchased this machine it worked fairly well, although it did use more ink than any other machine I've ever used. However, about a year in use it can no longer print black text OR images. Cleaning and deep cleaning does not seem to make any difference. Replacing the PGBK ink cartridge does not make any difference either. Works well as a scanner or fax machine. Just don't expect it to print anything if you develop a problem with printing black text.
