When I received this product, the underside of the glass was already dirty and smudged. I can see no way to clean it as I can't figure out how to take the glass out. According to this site, the following should have been included: Film Guides for 35mm (negatives) and 35mm (mounted slides), a Documentation kit with a Setup Software & User's Guide CD-Rom, a Quick Start Guide, a Cross Sell Sheet, and a Registration Card. All I received was the Setup Software & User's Guide CD-ROM. I didn't realize I was supposed to receive those other items, so I didn't know until now that they were missing. No wonder I couldn't find the Quick Start Guide on the online manual. I am very disappointed with this purchase and am seriously considering buying a different scanner.

I purchased this scanner for my wife for all of her scanning and it has been a great backup scanner for my graphic design work when needed. It is a real workhorse.

Pros: easy to use, High resolution
Overall, I'm happy with the performance of this scanner, especially if you consider the price vs. speed. It scans four slides at a time, is perhaps a bit slow, but I only want to finally scan all the family and vacation slides into modern media, so this is just fine. The scan quality is more than ample. I highly recommend this unit. The only negative may be the fact that replacements for the slide holder are unavailable, so I have to be very careful in using it.

Pros: durable, easy to use, High-speed scanning, Fast Connectivity, High resolution, quiet
Cons: none
Excellent product from all angles. Easy install to MS WinVista 64bit OS, using provided software. Highly recommend for everyday scanning. Fast and ultra quiet compared to previously owned scanners. Had to look at it a few times to make sure it was running, it is so quiet.

Pros: Compact Design, easy to use, High-speed scanning, Fast Connectivity, High resolution
Cons: construction could be sturdier
Puchased scanner to digitize slides. It has done an excellent job in performing this task. Haven't used to perform other scanning ops yet. Based on my success with slides, I believe it will perform well in other areas.Construction could be sturdier

Pros: durable, easy to use, High resolution, easy hook up, great support
Cons: Slow-speed scanning
I love this scanner, I have zero issues with it, beyond it's speed. It's quite slow when it's scanning but it picks up everything. I've gone through scanners when I was an EIC of a newspaper like water, because of poor DPI and contrast, and this for the price is one of the best scanners I have found. You should stop reading this and pick one up. If it ever breaks, I would buy another one in a heartbeat. HUGE FAN!!

Pros: durable, easy to use, High-speed scanning, High resolution, hinged & flexible lid, scans slides
Cons: none
I've now had my Canoscan 4400f for 1.5 years. In that time, I've done quite a bit of scanning - both of print materials and 35mm slides. The scanner captures tremendous detail. The colors are quite vivid (with mild fading showing up only when scanning >20-year-old slides).
When I first start the scanner (by opening the Canoscan Toolbox), the menu of scanning options is quite thorough. After clicking "scan", though, I usually get an error message telling me something to the effect that I need to restart the Toolbox because of a twain error. I don't know what a "twain" error is but, if I just click "scan" again after the error message goes away, it scans without any problem from then on. The error message only appears on the 1st scan after the printer hasn't been used in a while. Once it goes away, it stays gone for the duration of the project.
The time scanning takes is directly proportional to the number of pixels per inch I've told it to scan. I can scan a letter-size pdf or photo at 300 ppi in way less than 20 seconds (haven't timed it precisely). Scanning 4 slides takes a little longer - no more than a minute for the 4 slides at high resolution.
The scanner came with a good deal of software which is fairly easy to use and contains many of the same features as Photoshop Elements. Since I use Photoshop Elements most of the time, I'm not very familiar with ScanSoft.
My scanner is quite durable. My 20-pound cat hasn't hurt it yet by sitting and walking on it (I really do try to stop him from doing so - not easy!). The scanner was incredibly easy to connect to my computer and I've had no problems with Vista compatibiltiy.
Buying the Canoscan 4400f in conjunction with the Canon PIXMA iP4300 printer has turned out to be a great decision. In trying to choose between an all-in-one and separate components, I decided to buy the separate components since they were better rated for both quality & reliability in every review I read. The combination also turned out to be much cheaper than an all-in-one that would produce similar quality output.
Bottom line - I LOVE THIS SCANNER!!!

Pros: High resolution
Cons: Large Footprint, Slow-speed scanning
The scanner I used for years would not work with the iMac upgrade, so I had to look for a new unit. I will agree with a number of the reviews about the size. If you do not have a lot of desk space, look for another scanner as this one is about 10" wide and 19" long. Also at a low resolution, it goes OK with so so results, but use the highest and be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait as this is doing 4 negatives/slides at a time. However, you will have a beautiful, clear and sharp picture. It is not the highest construction quality however with normal and careful use, it should last for a long time, just be careful with use of the slide/film strip holder. It is a good unit for the money, but had I really realized the size and speed, I would have purchased another model. I should have paid attention to my gut feelings and believed: "you get what you pay for." I will be replacing this unit in the near future.

Extremely difficult to use and not all I get is "unable to find twain source" which disallows any functioning. When it did work it was very very slow.

Cons: Slow-speed scanning
It was slow scanning slides. Haven't scanned anything else yet . The included ArcSoft could be a little easier to use, but it does its job. Hard to understand. Instructions for slides needs to be inserted. Instructions are for film strips only. I purchased it fo scan my slides.
