Cons: don't force me to buy ink when i don't need it, don't cripple features when no ink present
OK, this has been a great printer/scanner, but has one SERIOUS bug.
If you have ANY ink level low then you can't do anything at all!!!
Why, oh, why must I have a good color ink cartridge to print in black and white?
Why, oh, why must I have a good color ink cartridge to scan???
I am trying to copy a black and white document but now I must go out a buy a new color cartridge!!! Why!!!
I also need to scan some documents, but can't.
I would have rated this 5* across the board, but this bug pulls it to a 1*.
Cannon, don't FORCE me to buy ink when I don't need it!!!
Won't buy Cannon again.

This printer is wasteful and very expensive to operate. Would recommend something else - different manufacturer maybe.

Average printer... kind of slow when you need something printed fast. My main beef with my MP490 is the manufacturing set up which prevents me from refilling the ink cartridge with my own ink. I have a high quality set of inks that i use to refill empty cartridges but cant use it because Canon wont allow it. What ever happened to the days when a printer was just that... a printer? Canon uses their printers as revenue raisers to get the buyer to buy their ink.... and ONLY their ink. How would we feel if Ford Motor insisted on buying only Ford parts or their cars wouldn't operate? If you want to fill your own cartridges, dont buy anything made by Canon. Otherwise its average quality printer.

Frequequently have problems getting it to print. Seems like it always happens right in the crunch. Refuses to print. Says out of paper. Have to redownload driver multiple times.

I've had this printer for more than a year. It works. The quality of prints is good. However, of course there are many features which this printer lacks. It is sloooow. Every time I turn it on it takes at least a minute to start printing. Often in the middle of printing it stops and thinks, making noises, and then in 30-40 seconds it continues to print. The software that comes with it is also cumbersome and not user friendly. It also uses ink rather fast. But for the money I paid for it it is a good printer.

I used another printer for years and the ink costs so much that I could almost buy another printer. Anyway, I got this printer and have been very pleased with it. Ink cartridges are so much lower. Also the feature of being able to use my SD card from my camera is neat too.

Cons: will not scan with low ink cartridges
Needed to scan some reference letters tonight, to use in an e-mail and because the ink was low, the scanner would not work. I work in visual communications and print very little of what I scan, and when I do print it is often on a large format printer. So the all in one printer I was happy with, just made me sad. Now I have to go spend money on ink, when I really just want to be able to use it to scan. Oh well. Should have bought another flat bed scanner. I cheaped out and got what I paid for. Guess I learned my lesson.

i used this product for about 5 months until it stopped working. it jams all the time now along with very poor alignment. it does not print correctly and does print as it should. do not get this printer. it is not worth your money at all. very poorly made printer. worst printer i have ever used.

Cons: only last through the warranty period
I received this printer after the first Canon I had stopped working just after the warranty went out. Now this printer has quit working. The rollers quit pulling the paper. After numerous attempts at cleaning the roller and other parts via the guide, the printer still will not pull the paper. The printer will only work about 4 or 5 months. I would NOT suggest it. I certainly will not be purchasing another CANON printer.

I bought this to use with a MacBook Pro and was very impressed with features, design and quality of the printing. After I had it a month and had only printed appx. 40 documents the printer showed a "paper jam" error. There was not a paper jam but the system insists there is. I tried everything to reset it to no avail. I changed ink catridges and cleaned machine. But I still have the paper jam error code, which renders the machine worthless. When it is showing the paper jam error I can not even use the scanner feature. The store I purchased it from no longer sells this model so I am unable to return it.

I do like my new printer that I bought last August. I am impressed with photo lab quality printing from my Canon MP490 printer. Scan and copy is very good! Easily prints from memory card without use of computer.

Pros: fast reliable good quality ease of use.
This is my second Canon printer that I've purchased. I've shopped around and not too many compare with Canon. I get what I need from this printer - quality, reliability, speed and ease of use. All this for the price that fits my budget. It's also comforting to know that I'm not forgotten after the purchase. What I mean is, Canon is always available for any assistance that I may need. Either for troubleshooting (haven't had any), operation questions, and all the supplies that I may need.

When printing lots of pages, this is a very slow printer. The print quality is fine. The price was good. It takes me forever to print when I have a lot different items to print. It seems to need its own RAM memory or better program.

I bought this printer yesterday. I chose it because it was compact (compared to other canons). Also we had to have wifi. The wifi setup was an absolute BREEZE! I have windows 7 and it was effortless to set this printer up. The picture quality is almost as good as Wolf camera (where I used to get my photos printed). I will be using my printer now. It worked great with my new digital camera. I can also print straight from my playstaion3. I have not scanned anything yet. I hope this printer continues to perform well. Would give 5 stars, but have only had printer for 1 day. Need to see how it will hold up over time.

For the visually impaired who use the Premier Literacy software pack, particularly the SCAN and READ utility, this scanner will not work. I have installed the June 2010 drivers with no success.
Otherwise I have no problem with the printer.

i just got this printer when i bought my macbook pro and i went to set it up and it was going great till i realized they do not give u the usb cord to hook it up to your pc/mac ...is that a joke u have to go buy one. i mean i bought the printer u could at least give me the right cords for it...

The computer was very easy to set up but I've been looking and looking for the cord to connect it to my computer and have looked and looked throughout the web site as well as directions for the type of cord I need. Have had to go back and forth to the office supply store to find a cord that matches. Wasn't very convenient.
