I decided to buy this camera because aside from its IQ, my 5D kept sending me back to my D200 for a shooter's camera. The 7D arrived propitiously in time for a week off work and a snowstorm - perfect for the kind of work I like to do most. I got to follow some cardinals and a pheasant through snowy inner-city backyards around me to test the mettle of this 7D with my beloved lightweight and nasty-sharp 300mm f/4L IS and a 430EX.
Canon finally gets it, IMHO. Without paying megabucks for a camera the size and weight of a patio stone to hang on me as I climb fences wearing boots, I do need a fast, intuitive and responsive camera. This is it. The controls are placed so they don't slow me down. The camera is sized and shaped for moving. AF to die for. Muffled shutter noise. Good with gloves.

I upgraded from an XSi, also a great camera, but after using the 7D in store for only a short while, I knew it would bring my photography to a whole new level.
I didn't blindly rate the 7D 5 stars in every category, I really think it deserves it. In terms of features, the 7D is probably Canon's flagship. This thing feels like a testbed of new tech, and it really brings a lot of useful gadgets to the table. I especially like the orientation-aware AF setting mode.
In terms of performance, the AF is fast, the viewfinder display is excellent and unobtrusive, and the shooting speed is epic. Image "noise" should be renamed "grain" when you shoot with this camera; it's there, but the subtlety is excellent (if you have realistic expectations).
The video mode is also excellent, and well through out. However, I would've liked to see Tv and Av modes enabled (you can do auto or manual, with Auto ISO on either) and there is the rolling shutter artifact that plagues all CMOS video systems. But it's still a great feature.
The camera is complicated to use to its fullest, but the main shooting controls are the same as other pro-series EOS cameras, so no major complaints. Once you get used to it, everything flows nicely.

Cons: no full frame
Pro: This is a great semi-pro level camera before you step up to the Mark series. It is for those who feel that they need more control. I can only tell you that it was worth the buy and I think who ever gets their hands on this or the next model of this camera will enjoy the returns of quality.
Con: The only con for me is that it is not full frame. My last camera was full frame, so me it is taking me some time to adjust from the view point.

After much deliberation, I purchased this model as an upgrade from my XSI. The pic quality is excellent and I'm glad I went with this model. It is heavier than my previous camera, but I feel that makes it more durable and solid. The controls are different and it has taken some time to get adjusted, but it's not hard to learn the new placements. No problems with battery life or other operations so far. The only con so far is that it's heavy, but that is the difference between consumer brand and a more professional brand.

I bought this camera 7D Xmas of 2009 i was THRILLED to have the camera of my Dreams.I LOVED the Camera till 2012 when it started doing crazy things such as wouldnt shoot in Fast Mode,Wouldnt Focus right,when i set the camera to my settings it kept going back to Factory mode.I sent it in to Best BUY(BIG MISTAKE) 2 times an it still isnt right if i were to buy another Camera it sure isnt gonna be a CANON.

I love my Canon 7D and i think it is the bomb. I love all it can do and everything it is capable of doing it is just amazing. I love the canon products very much there build quality. The Canon 7D being completely sealed for environmental purposes is an excellent thought on Canons part. Canon the reputation and quality of there work is why I will always be a Canon Man and never buy anything else buy Canon. The 7D is definitely a clear winner in my eyes that Canon produced. When I first held my Canon 7D I knew right away it was a quality piece of electronics just the feel and the weight spoke for itself. I have held plenty of other camera and they feel like toys in my hands very light and plastic feeling almost like a toy camera. As I tell everyone I know as far as I am concerned their is only one camera maker on the market and that is !!!!!!! CANON !!!!!!! .

I bought my 7D 2 years ago, and have been satisfied with my purchase.
It is a super fast, reliable and solid camera. The autofocus is accurate and the speed is such that it easy to 'get the shot'. Good battery life if all you are doing is walk around photography. The camera is also super durable.
My biggest complaint is that the 7D's pictures are all somewhat 'soft'. I have heard this is attributed to a particularly strong AA filter. I am always cranking up the sharpness on DPP or lightroom. Also, I wouldn't think of using less than the top of the line lenses for the 7D, I'm currently using the 15-85mm and 24-105mm primarily on this camera. I have used a couple lower quality lenses and was thoroughly disappointed with the results. Other than that, this camera is heavy, but that is also what gives it its durability.

I have owned this model for two years now and a few days ago it cam e back from a warranty repair (top dial was snagging the power switch and the JPEG/RAW button jammed).
Well it was awesome before but now, even more awesome. Things were definately different in many ways with a noticeable improvement in picture quality.
Why? Well, on further inspection it seems during the repair they updated it to the new firmware 2.0.4 which is a major upgrade with many additional features.
Recommendation: Check and update your Firmware if needed.
Criticism: I dont know how long this Firmware upgrade has been available but stumbled upon it by chance on Google. Canon could have publicised it or even emailed registered 7D owners (I am).

This was my second purchase of a Canon 7D body. while I was impressed with the first one, this one presents a much clearer picture when cropped and magnified. It is great for photographing birds in flight. I would not hesitate to suggest this body to anyone. My lens are all 'L' lens so that helps. I thought the first one was great but for some reason this puts it to shame. I now carry three cameras with me and have different lens on each plus a 2X in my bag. My original 7D had been dropped a few times and it never affected it's ability to bring excellent photographs.

I originally bought this camera for stills, but I eventually moved into film and now I use this camera 90% for filming. This camera has never failed me, battery life is great when taking photos. Only complaints I have would be that noise past 3200 makes the image unusable.

Love this camera. I had the XSI and upgraded to the 7D while I was still taking photography classes. Superior quality built and excellent image quality. The LCD is bright and the features are great with very simple control menu. Very quiet when you take a pic will not scare off whatever it is your taking pictures of in nature. Starts very fast, solid operation and kind of easy to use. You do have to know how to use this camera, classes help. Not lightweight so be prepared. With different lens weight is heavier still. Battery is great, only charge when I remember may go months.

Had this camera for over two years. It goes everywhere with me. It has worked at Sub Zero temps hanging from my neck while I hike in mountain snow. It has worked at desert temperatures in the Summer. It never misses a shot.
Once I learned how to use the focus sensor for best use, I rarely have a bad shot, and the bad ones are user failures. Me experimenting with the settings usually.
I need more lenses to make this great camera more capable.
There is nothing I would change. Unless of course if it could weigh less.

I purchased this as a replacement for our old 10D. What a major jump in quality. I got the upgraded 7D and could not be happier. I like the pop-up flash being higher so there is no lens shadow when I use it with my 24-105L lens. The quickness of focus blows me away as well. The controls are well laid out and easy to use. For those who complain no camera is perfect but this is a great step up for me. I was going to go with the 6D as a full size sensor would be nice but no built in flash. Come on Canon would it hurt? I do work professionally associated with being an Architect and this camera is great.

I shoot landscapes to HS sports for local paper. Used 40d for 2 years and yet felt I need more fps and better low light capabilities.
Initially, I found that my camera skills lacking in using 7d.. I had to hands on work each picture, organize my thought process to speed up to Camera level...I don't look at LCD when I am taking sports pictures, as it waste battery AND I have missed great shots because i was reviewing my earlier shots. Set and use custom C1-C3 are just great.
Use Prime lenses about half time for sport events, and 7d really shines with them, 50,85 and 135 really use 8fps and yet below 1600 ISO..I don't own Flash unit and haven't really needed one so far, even for HS BB. Use only Sandisk Extreme cards, fast enough to catch 8fps and quick downloads.
I had to mentally work on learning to easily, 1. change focus point settins, understand subject tracking capabilites and limits. Owner must take time to learn the capabilities of this camera, otherwise go buy a P/S..
Only use Canon lenses. others may say they get good results with 3rd party and they may, but Canon lense were built only to be used on Canon cameras...Surprisingly some of my best sports, landscapes, etc pics are using 50 f1.4 on the 7d,, and can get good results in almost No light situation.. I began school in Boston for photography and at the time the 7D was the 'new guy on the block' - a step down from th 5D Mark II everyone was raving about without the price so decided to give it a try. Instantly I became inseperable from it. Amazing handheld capabilities, intense sharp quality even with a mediocre lens. I captured crystal clear photos of the Blue Angels performing while on a boat while simply point and clicking - no tripod or anything. Tons of options but very simple (once you get the hand of it). Unfortunately I had to sell it and I have been yearning for it back ever since. I'm not sure what other Canon cameras can camera but I am definitely sold every time on this fellah.

Upgrading from a 50D, I immediately found the incredible 7D to be a FAR more sophisticated, technologically advanced "animal". Must say, it's not something I'd suggest to even an "advanced amateur" to consider unless that next level of dedication to "photography / creating images" is within reach - as this digital camera body is a jump beyond someone used to simply "taking pictures". It's a bit of a heavyish chunk to hold and use but the professional-quality of construction and weather-proofing is worth it. Quite a learning curve to fine-tune the image quality settings - really experiencing what the 7D is capable of! - and the images are jaw-dropping! Needs a sturdy tripod and "fed" Canon 'L' lenses and you'll receive the image quality you desire. A side-by-side shoot-out with the fine 50D and the 7D dramatically exceeded my wildest expectations!

I researched this camera for about 4 months before finally purchasing it. I was at first getting it for photographing high school hockey games as a friend had one and was having excellent luck with it. I also purchased the EF 70-200 2.8f IS USM lens at the same time. and have found it also useful for night and day high school football games as well as dog shows and especially drag races. I'm not a professional , but have been using 35mm since mid 70's and have had the 7d for over 2 years now and have taken over 30,000 pics with it. I'm still learning how to use it and still have a lot to learn, but its a great camera to learn on. I've since purchased a 2X wxtender for it and that works very well for outdoor activities during daylight hours. I did have to send it off for repair once because a pin got bent some how where the SD card goes in. I wish you could look through view finder when videoing I find it hard to follow action while trying to look at the monitor. Other than that its a great camera...couldn't imagine why any one would want more. Its a bit heavy when loaded with lens, but most cameras are.

Up graded from xsi, took some getting used to the menu, and controls in different locations but after taking couple of weeks shooting with the camera and getting the settings to my liking ,I am really enjoying the outcome of my photos. I don't like to use a lot of post processing so I rely on the camera to take quality images. I'm impressed with low light images and my night time city scapes are vastly improved due to the cameras ability to handle dark scenes with low noise. I have seen other reviews that say low light performance is not good but I think it may be a setting problem, once I got this camera dialed in and understood its metering system ( much reading) I get very quality images. Very happy with purchase and camera performance.
