Pros: amazing picture quality, easy to function, great to learn with, great lens options, easy to hold, shoot horizontal or vertical for portraits
Cons: a little heavy, small lcd screen
I bought this camera second-hand before going into my upper level Photography classes in my college [photojournalism major]. And not only were my teachers impressed, but I don't think any of my grades were below a A- thanks to this wonderful camera. Sure, its a little heavier than most people might like, but you'll get some muscle in your arms, which is always good, right? You will always have amazing shots with this camera, and although the screen is kinda on the small side, you don't need to worry if it turned out. The manual is your best friend. It's easy to read and gives you a leg up on getting better with the camera, like teaching you what settings work best in certain conditions over others and how the ISO/ASA works, important stuff like that as a Photo student in college also gives me a head start in my classes, so double bonus.

Canon Eos 1D is the camera for the strobist! Get the flash off camera with Pocketwizard or something like it and you can sync the flash at ANY shutter speed because it has an ELECTRONIC shutter! If only ALL Canons had this feature!

Pros: Superior build quality, excellent image quality, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, quiet, Quick Start-up time, Solid Operation, easy to use, good battery life
Cons: Heavy/Bulky
I bought this used - 2nd owner - for 25% of original price. It has paid for itself many times over. The EOS-1d will shoot pictures nearly instantaneously and always captures the action. Built of cast magnesium: quite heavy but nearly indestructible - not for the faint of heart. Add a telephoto lens and it is difficult to hold steady for longer exposures w/o a tripod. Original battery would last almost forever on one charge; Canon replacement isn't quite as good. Great pictures, effortless and fast. First camera with a sensor as large as a 35mm film. 4 megapixels is more than enough for what I do. Downloading is by Firewire - great for Macs, not for Windows. Drivers work for w2000 & XP; unsupported on Vista. Plenty of lenses out there that will work with this camera.
