Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, Bright LCD, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, durable
Cons: Heavy/Bulky, Short battery life
To start I have had this camera since its inception in 2002, and have loved every shot with it to this day (2009). I feel the feature set is amazing, for a first digital camera it has been great, and for an intermediate power user it is just amazing. I am still finding great features to play around with even after 7 years. Compared to some I may not have taken a lot of pictures, but on average this little camera has taken 4 pictures every day. That puts it at about 10,000 total pictures!
This camera is so durable, it has survived multiple 2 story falls, dipped in water, covered in mud, sprayed by volcanic sulfur vents and countless years of handling and dropping abuse; and I am taking it out to sea this month! This little camera can sure take a beating! And even if it is too much it is still engineered well enough I can take it apart and clean/re-align the internals and keep it going for another few years!
The only drawbacks after 7 years of use with this camera are probably the size, and the battery life. It never felt like an ultra portable, or "compact" camera. its kind of heavy and not easily concealable. The battery only seems to last about 1-2 hours of continuous shooting. There have been minor things like the front cover is very touchy and sometimes will power down inadvertently. On one such drop the camera seemed to be a goner, but after opening it up and resetting the zoom gears it worked like a champ.
Yet for those two drawbacks, it doesn't detract that this is one solid, well engineered camera. I just hope when it comes time to replace it, Canon will have a camera ready for the rigors and abuse I intend to put it through.
