My son got one and I was so impressed with the ease and capabilities of it, I had to have one. I don't need a video recorder now that I have this due to the card capacity that is available and my both my laptop and house computers so it is so easy

Pros: easy to use, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, durable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu
I have the S500, it was my second Canon and I use it often. I discovered that if you have your camera WITH YOU, you'll take more pictures. Although I grew up with 35mm film and have a few old cameras in the closet, I love the digital format and the savings that digital offers over film developing. Taking pictures is much easier with the pocket sized Elphs versus the bulky 35mm cameras.
This camera is a little mule. I take it everywhere and it performs for me in all situations and conditions. I shoot either low density snapshots or higher density shots to stitch together for panoramic views. I know that there are many, many controls on the camera but it's so easy to use I basically ignore most of the controls and just shoot away with very few setting adjustments. I'm aware of f stops and apeture and shutter speed, but the camera is so flexible and forgiving you really don't need to think about photography - just take beautiful pictures and enjoy the process. I have also bought my wife a S330 and recently bought an SD400 as a backup camera for my S500. I had one problem with the S500 and Canon fixed it at no charge, which convinced me that I was doing business with the right company and will continue to use Canon in the future. I like Canon cameras so much that I'm about to buy a Canon printer for my PC.
These cameras are rugged and are consistently rated very high by users and professionals. You cannot go wrong with a Canon camera.

Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality
I am bias to this camera, and being my first Pwershot S500 , I may just be partial mostly to it, long lived family member, and I own the SD800 IS also. For some reason, my eyes just like the pictures from the S500 the best, especially for my photos I use for ebaying. Clean, sharp, focused, and lively, is how I want to describe the photos from the S500. I like the SD800 IS, which I purchased as a back up to ebay, when I left my S500 with the granddaughter parents, and they were too busy to mail back to me asap. SD800 IS has it good features, likewise with the S500, But, the S500 is my favorite. And now, thanks to the folks at ELK Grove Village, Illinois, she is back in top form. There service attention to me prompt this review and praise. Kudos to the repair people also.
I could compare apples to oranges, but the main thing a camera does is take pictures, and the S500 does that perfectly for me. You could compare weight, size, etc, but , picture for picture, for some reason, I just think the old S500 is the BOMB. I have no financial interest with Canon, other than owning two of their digitals , but they at ELK Grove Village sure treated me like a king and the S500 is my beloved camera. THANKS CANON.

Pros: Bright LCD, Lightweight/Portable
Cons: Complicated controls/menu, Poor Low-Light Performance
I have had my S500 for three years. I was pleased with the camera at first, even though I found the menu to be a bit confusing. But the "red-eye" reduction has never been very good. In the sunshine it was generally a good camera. But now even that is a problem. I have only had the camera three years and it has not been mishandled but something is definitely wrong with it. It will take a few good pictures, and then really awful pictures that have grayed out stripes in them, and then it will take good pictures again. I can't rely on it at all.

Pros: easy to use, Simple controls/menu, Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Good Low-Light Performance, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
Cons: menu navigation could be streamlined
This camera came recomended by professional phototgraphers. It shoots great right out of the box and has enough tweakability to shoot in most lighting conditions. It has rekindled my interest in photography. My shots just get better and better.

Pros: Nice features/settings, excellent image quality, Lightweight/Portable, good battery life, durable
I received this camera as a gift about 4 years ago. It has been a wonderful camera. I love the quality of photos. The functions on the camera are outstanding though they are a little confusing at first. It holds a battery charge well. And depending on the setting, lots of pictures. Overall, I am pleased with this camera. Oh, it is very durable. I have children who have found my camera and managed to drop it a few times when I wasn't looking......It is very durable.
